The mission of the ophthalmology division is to teach medical students about medical and surgical aspects of eye diseases important to all future doctors, while also providing more advanced experience and supporting research for medical students interested in ophthalmology. The vision of the ophthalmology division is to develop excitement and dedication to research and teaching in the faculty, which will benefit the patients and community of Hawai’i.

The Mission and Vision of the Pediatric Surgery Division are to introduce and emphasize the singular nature of its patients in the broad context of a General Surgery teaching program. This uniqueness arises particularly from the size, metabolism, physiology, and developmental immaturity of the young organism in contrast to the fully developed adult. Success in the management of these patients depends upon recognizing and accommodating their special needs.

The Division of Plastic Surgery offers educational, research, and operating experience to medical students, general surgery, and orthopedic residents. They are taught advanced manual skills of suturing and knot tying that include microsurgical techniques. The latter is taught by Dr. Parsa one-on-one with students and residents. All students and residents whether or not they are interested in a career in plastic surgery are exposed to the various aspects of both academic and private practice of plastic surgery. Additionally, they are given opportunities for research in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery that will help them better understand the specialty and assist them in securing a residency/fellowship position in plastic surgery programs if they chose to do so.

The Division of Radiology Mission supports the Department of Surgery’s shared goals to provide inspiring academic opportunities for Medical Students, fostering academic excellence, lifelong learning, and ultimately ensuring state-of-the-art medical practitioners for the people of Hawai’i.

Through our Radiology electives and lectures, the Division provides medical students with an appreciation for and a fundamental knowledge of Radiology. We aspire to teach basic competence in multimodality interpretations, foster appropriate use of Radiological services and imaging technologies; thus ensuring patient safety, efficient use of resources, and an ability to confidently incorporate Imaging into their medical practices.

The goal of the division is added to support, counsel, mentor, and inspire those students who may wish to pursue a career in Imaging and to provide research opportunities for those with more academic goals.
